    Emma Hogan
    May 24th - Jun 15th 2012

Talbot Gallery is proud to present; ‘Remnants’ a solo exhibition by Emma Hogan, 24th May -15th June 2012

Emma Hogan was the 2011 winner of the Talbot Gallery Studios annual Most Promising Graduate Award. This award is presented to an outstanding candidate who is considered to display talent, flair, innovation and potential by Talbot Gallery Studios. The winner receives an 11 month residency within the Talbot Studios, resulting in a solo exhibition within the gallery space. The award also provides the winner with a support system and the opportunity to work within a professional creative environment. The 2012 winner of the Most Promising Graduate Award will be announced to mark the closing of this exhibition.

Emma's practice is based on ideas of nostalgia, relics and memory. Viewing other's home photos is akin to taking a glance into their past and private memories. Such intimate material, once located in physical family albums, is now shared without hesitation with friends, acquaintances and at times strangers, on the internet.

Through searching on social media websites, Emma has located groups dedicated to reconnecting photographs lost in a natural disaster in the USA with their owners. The photographs vary in terms of subject matter and era. Using this as a source she has selected the unclaimed images and used them as inspiration for painting. Because she uses images of unknown subjects, Emma uses painting methods to obscure the original image in order to reflect the distance between subject and viewer, allowing the subject of the photograph greater anonymity.

In painting these images the viewer is invited to decipher or create their own context and narrative. This is a pivotal change in Emma’s approach; rather than painting her own memories as she had explored in her graduate show, this body of work sees her delving into the memories of others.

The Talbot Gallery is delighted to show Emma Hogan’s debut exhibition, Remnants, and through providing this residency and exhibition we have facilitated Emma in producing such a strong body of work.

Emma is a 2011 DIT BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate. She has since exhibited in galleries such as Monster Truck, Pallas Projects and KT Contemporary.

5OADO (Five On A Day Out)
    Jun 21st - Jun 30th 2012

Remaining rooted in our present circumstances and deploying their skilled technical proficiency, 5OADO have the ability to capture whimsical and light-hearted elements which can prove to be somewhat elusive in the practice of many. They capture the joy of creativity and allow the viewer accessibility into the play of concept, technique and visual beauty present in their work.

Beginning on quite an austere viewpoint can set the barometer and focus askew. The intent, however, is not such, beginning with wartime ‘Austerity’ and ending on the fruitful ‘Binge’. A concentration on process and skilful art making whilst following a conscientious approach to creating a visually enticing spectacle lies in the grasp of 5OADO.

‘Cocooning’ is a term used to describe general public behaviour in a time of austerity. It is the return to a time of comfort and stability. Even Children have become affected and LEGO’s colourful dependable offerings topped the polls for best selling toy of Christmas 2011.The behaviour of our predecessors is adhered to – baking bread and growing vegetables creates a feeling of security and self-sufficiency, and the ability to self-sustain in an unsure climate. ‘Cocooning’ is also applicable to contemporary art.

Following the recent growing return to celebration of artists skilled in traditional art making processes; Bevis Hillier’s ‘Austerity/Binge: Decorative Arts of the Forties and Fifties’ observes a ‘nod’ to the past and the archiving of images and artwork which may have been discarded or lost. Quite aptly put by Bevis Hillier:

‘…when a period is ripe for nostalgia – which is history by spontaneous combustion – it is probably ready for the historian’

In this instance, 5OADO act as the historian. Collating the information from past decades which embody success and indulgence, grounding it in concepts ripe with wartime austerity and creating a skilled visual likened to the ‘You’ve never had it so good’ of the late 1950’s, ‘Austerity/Binge’ winks at the past, present and future and delivers to the viewer the reality rooted in the dream.

    Nicole Tilley

I'm a visual artist based in Dublin. My art practice begins with drawing in small notebooks that travel with me everywhere. These are a visual repository of ideas and characters that I expand using a diverse range of media including etching and paper cutting. I am especially influenced by vintage childhood literature and illustration, old master etchings and Andalucían street art. My work often explores liminal conditions yet I would hope that it is open to multiple interpretations. I hold a Masters Degree in Fine Art from The National College of Art and Design, Ireland and have exhibited extensively. My work can be found in many private and public collections both within Ireland and internationally.
